The national park at your doorstep provides numerous day walk and tramping opportunities. In winter take your choice of five local ski fields.
Visit alpine meadows with their wild flower displays and rare native birds. Have an adventure in local caves, canyons, or climb to stunning mountain tops and glaciers
Directions
Arthur's Pass Village is located in the middle of Arthur's Pass National Park. Buses drop-off directly outside the Mountain House Hostel in the morning and afternoon, and the railway station is only a 200 metre walk from us.
By road it is 154km from Christchurch on Highway 73. From Greymouth, go south on Highway 6 to Kumara Junction. Turn east on Highway 73 and ascend the mountains to Arthur's Pass township, a distance of 100km. Free off-street parking is available.
The Tranz Alpine train (Ph. 0800 872 467) runs daily to Arthur's Pass township, from Christchurch and Greymouth. This trip is considered to be one of the 'great rail journeys of the world', as it passes through spectacular gorges and alpine scenery.
By bus, Atomic Shuttles (Ph 0508 108 359) travel daily to Arthur's Pass from Christchurch and Greymouth or Hokitika. West Coast Shuttle bus (Ph 03 768 0328) also operates daily to Arthur's Pass providing a morning service from the West Coast and an afternoon service from Christchurch or the Christchurch Airport.
Within the national park the Mountain House Shuttle can provide transport to/from track heads, or local ski fields.
