Explore the Cederberg (#1/12) This photos shows a composite of sight on our Cederberg Ramble tour. Several paintings as seen on the Sevilla and Salmanslaagte San rock art trails, the Wolfberg Cracks, Wolfberg Arch, Maltese Cross, Tunnels of the Stadsaal Caves.
Inside the main Wolfberg Crack (#2/12) There are 3 cracks, two of which we visit. The main crack cuts about half a kilometer into the top of the Wolfberg's rock face, starting out at about 10 meters wide, then narrows towards the end. A bit of scramble to get out, then you return via a much larger crack to the starting point. You can always back track if the going gets too hard.
Wolfberg Crack (#3/12) An iconic Wolfberg Crack (part of the Cederberg mountain range) photo taken by photographer Jono Hey. It captures the moment perfectly when you step into the main crack - the place is awesome, some would say sacred!
San (Bushman) painting (#4/12) The word San actually means 'scoundrel', most bushman today prefer to be called 'Bushman'. They were the first inhabitants of Southern Africa and have been systematically pushed of the land by African pastoral tribes and later white settlers.
Michelle inside the crack (#5/12) Although the area can be hot over summer, 30 to 40 degrees Celsius, always take warm gear with. Inside the wolfberg cracks it is always cool. Extra water, sunscreen, old clothes, snacks, jacket, hat, running or hiking shoes. In winter it can snow in the are.
Stadsaal Caves (#6/12) Explore the strange other-worldly rock formations and tunnels of the Stadsaal caves. The area is flat and easy to explore.
Entrance to the Stadsaal Caves (#7/12) A perfect place for a pic-nic or sundowners
Huge natural pool (#8/12) For those not wanting to hike up to the Wolfberg Crack. You can hike along the river to a huge natural swimming pool.
Salmanslaagte Bushman Painting (#9/12) Some say it's whale others it's a ship. The best way to view the Salmanslaagte rock art sites is by sunset horse ride (optional activity).
San (Bushman) paintings near Stadsaal Caves (#10/12) This is usually the only San painting seen by tourists to the Cederberg - but there are many many more. There are over 2000 recorded paintings scattered across the mountains.
Stadsaal Caves (#11/12) The creationist vs evolutionary explanations on how the Stadsaal Caves where formed differ vastly. But both camps agree the rock formations are spectacular.
Olifants River (#12/12) We prefer to overnight along the banks of the Olifants River, due to optional activities available, such as fishing, canoe hire, sunset cruises, swimming, additional hikes, birding, tractor rides, etc. But this can change depending on accommodation availability and guest preferences.
